Progress at Moora rapid rail outloading and siding project

1/4/2025

Work on the Moora rapid rail outloading and siding project is progressing well since construction kicked off in November 2024.

Head contractor Laing O’Rourke Rail Operations is responsible for constructing a 1,440 metre rail siding and a new, six silo, 6,600 tonne fixed rail loading facility.

The project team is now focussed on the transition from civil works into the structural, mechanical and rail works on site, following the completion of 60,000 cubic metres of bulk earthworks.

The rail siding scope is progressing well with drainage works and rail turnout connections underway, and the ballast layer of the rail siding earthworks expected to be laid in the near future. Flash-butt welding of 150 to 350m lengths rail track has also been finished, ready for installation.

At the facility, 500 cubic metres of concrete foundations have been poured, and construction of the facility’s silos has started. Silo trestles have been erected on the concrete pad and the silo cones have been welded in preparation for installation onto the trestles.

The facility’s auger pit has also been assembled and installed, with attention now shifting to the installation of the reclaim conveyor.

In April the project team will invert and land the silo cones onto the trestle legs, and the first full silo structure will be erected at Moora.

The whole Moora project (both the siding and facility) is expected to be commissioned in the March quarter of 2026.

The Moora rapid rail outloading and siding project is one of 11 rail siding extensions to be delivered as part of our Path to 2033 Strategy.

Investment in our rail infrastructure and rail outloading assets will increase our tonnes to port and help ensure we are able to outturn a peak of 3 million tonnes a month by 2033.
